What is a "6 week wonder"? This is a derogatory phrase used by experienced dancers to define a dance student who has completed a 6 week beginner course and is now posing as an expert in the field, performing, teaching their own classes, etc.
I'm not sure if the concern is that the new dancer is not experienced enough to teach others effectively and without injury. Possibly concern for preservation of authenticity because they haven't mastered enough styles to hear the nuances of different regions in the music. Or maybe they're just jealous that a younger dancer is getting gigs and students.
Here's the thing, these new dancers aren't trying to sully the dance. They don't know that they're undercutting. They have no idea they're doing anything wrong. What they do know is that they just learned how to move their bodies in an amazing and fulfilling way. They are SO excited! Their friends are supporting them, asking them to show them some moves. They have a huge burst of empowerment in the new found things their bodies can do. They are feeling confident and good. They want to share it!
Are they ready to become teachers and performers? Maybe not, but who's to say. Most importantly, who is anyone else to determine that for them? How can anyone squash that kind of excitement and passion? Why put out their light? Usually it's the same people who complain that no one wants to come to bellydance classes anymore. I wonder why?
So, how do we protect the authenticity while also nurturing the new dancer's passion?
Personally, I think more advanced dancers should take a mentor roll with these firecrackers. Take them under your wing. This should be a no brainer if you're actually concerned for the way the art is being represented. Give book recommendations, send websites, videos, share pieces of knowledge. Bring them with you to workshops and encourage them to keep learning and growing. Ask them to accompany you to gigs and show them the ropes. They will only respect you for it, come to you as a resource, and feel supported and held within their community. Plus, they'll bring their friends, the community grows, and from a place of love and support for this amazing art that we treasure so dearly.
