In Samira's workshop, we'll dive into the lush, layered world of taqsim and chiftitelli - not just as movements, but as musical conversations. You'll learn how to listen deeply and dance with intention, interpreting the subtle shifts and textures in the music rather than just following the beat. We'll explore phrasing, ornamentation and the interplay between rhythm and melody, so your movements feel like a direct response to what you hear. Whether you're dancing to a mournful oud solo or a rich, rolling chiftitelli rhythm, this class will help you embody the music in a way that feels grounded, intimate, and uniquely your own.

Playground Productions is hosting three phenomenal performers/instructors in the different styles of belly dance: Raqs Sharqi, American Cabaret, and Fusion! This series presents an evolution in the belly dance arts and accompanied with live music by Indy based Middle Eastern style music group Indy Raqs! 

Samira's immersive class celebrates the improvisational dialogue between dancer and musicians, giving you the tools to embody the bold, expressive spirit of American Cabaret in its truest form – alive with music and rooted in the nightclubs of its era.

Travel back to the lively nightclubs of the 1960s and 1970s, where American Cabaret bellydance thrived amid the rise of feminism and multiculturalism. In this workshop, Samira guides you through crafting a full-length, fully improvised set, structured around classic musical rhythms. You'll kick off with a spunky opening to hook the audience, glide into a captivating veil section, melt into an emotive floorwork sequence, and wrap up with a high-energy drum solo finale. This hands-on class dives into the art of improvisation and celebrates the bold, feminine spirit of this iconic dance era.
